The Artist
My sculpture is mainly three categories: Realistic Wildlife, Native American themes, and Racks of the West. I believe all my sculpture should be considered Western. I am interested in producing sculpture that evokes feeling (soothes the savage beast), and adds dimension to its environment.
With realistic wildlife I am really going past realism; I am working to achieve an idealistic rendition. My sculpture is stylized and impressionistic. Capturing the essence, the trueness of the subject is the objective.
The Native American themes that captivate me are indeed ancient designs, from another world really, many of these images have developed over thousands of years. By applying modern art concepts to an already abstract subject I feel I am simply continuing the evolutionary process.
Racks of the West started as a series of miniature sculptures, which led to the life-sized versions beginning with the elk in 1997. Shed antlers combined with a stylized bronze casting of the appropriate creatures’ skull create a striking sculpture. There is a primal attraction in antlers; I simply invented a way to highlight that in a piece of western art.
I have been sculpting professionally since 1996; it is for me a calling. |
